The luxury market is not short of its contenders. The luxury market is also filled with endless amount of products that just oozes money. Well, they are called luxury products anyway and should be in a completely different class. The biggest statement to luxury though is not the wallet you carry, not the credit cards you own, not even the clothes you wear. It’s mostly the car you drive. Suddenly, what you wear and what you look like matters a lot less.
For the local market at least, nothing defines luxury like a Mercedes-Benz. In the Mercedes-Benz product line-up, nothing defines luxury like an S-Class. Wait a minute, we have to go back one step; we are not supposed to be talking about the S-Class today. Sorry lah, potong stim a bit.
We are supposed to be talking about the fastest growing market in the automotive industry, the SUV market. The market that saved the likes of Porsche from disappearing from the face of the earth and history. Of course, Mercedes-Benz, Malaysia’s most prestigious and popular luxury automotive brand cannot miss out on this market. They have been pushing the market with their GL and GLE lines with some success.
Today they strive to do even more with their brand new Mercedes-Benz GLE450 AMG Line. For those who are not too familiar with the GLE line, it is their premium SUV line. Not the crossover type or the small SUV type that is made mostly for the road and very little off-roading. This is the real deal, the full beans of an SUV. It isn’t the bulletproof G-Class, but it has to be luxurious and blend into the road.
So, the Mercedes-Benz GLE450 AMG Line. The new luxury SUV from Mercedes-Benz. What do you get for MYR633,888?
The Mercedes-Benz GLE450 AMG Line has a brand new look for 2019. It looks more sleek, but yet more powerful. It has more presence with those masculine lines and sharp glass shapes on the overhangs. The rear of the car is much neater and more aggressive than before. The front gets a slightly smaller headlights like the one you see on the A-Class. It may look proper on a small hatchback, but on a bigger SUV it does strike me as a bit odd. The front grille though is more expansive and much better looking than the grille of old. The stance is made even more powerful with the 22-inch 5 twin-spoke wheels. It looks properly planted. The weirdest part of all this though is that it actually looks very much like a much bigger version of the A-Class.
Interior wise though is very much similar to what you get from the current line of Mercedes-Benz interior. Plush, full of leather, luxurious, and very comfortable. Those are just the few words we can use to describe it. We do think that the center console is a little busy though with the buttons and navigation tool. It is still a very nice place to be in. Back to the A- Class reference – you get plenty more room and your seating position is more upright. Your visibility, because you’re higher up on the ground is much better too.
The GLE450 packs a very typical Mercedes-Benz power though. The 3.0 litre inline 6-cylinder powerplant pushes out 367 horses to the wheels. That accelerate the car from 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds, faster than my own measly Myvi by 3.3 seconds, assuming my Myvi still has that much power to begin with. That engine is paired to a 9G-Tronic transmission for smooth, seamless gear changes and improved fuel eeconomy.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE450 is available in two configurations; the 5-seater and 7-seater versions. The 5-seater will go at MYR633,888, while the 7-seater goes at MYR638,888. You can view the car at any Mercedes-Benz showroom today onward.
