Chances are when you start a conversation that contains the words “Mercedes-Benz” in them you will start thinking of their E-class. No, that’s not weird. Apart from being my favourite range of class in the Mercedes-Benz stables, it is also Mercedes-Benz’s signature class. Not flagship though, that title is reserved for the luxo-barges that are the S-class range.
The E-class though is usually regarded as an uncle car for many Malaysians. Not just any uncle though; the rich one, the one that made it among all the other uncles. It is also the mid-point between the uncle-with-the-driver S-class and the new-money-not-so-uncle C-class.
It does not mean that the E-class is any less sophisticated than the bigger, more expensive S-class though. The cabin space may be a tad smaller, especially in the back seats, but it is not what you call cramped in the back. You still get plenty of legroom and space as a medium-sized sedan. Just slightly more than a BMW for sure – at least it feels like so.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class then, is the quintessential Mercedes-Benz for the car person. A Mercedes-Benz that perfectly describes the brand in one car; elegant, powerful, luxurious, and desirable. That same brand description continues with the brand new Mercedes-Benz E-Class range that is now locally assembled.
The most powerful, currently in the new range is the Mercedes-Benz E350 AMG Line. I might have to add that this could be my favourite among the pack because; power. How much power? 299 horses breathing from the 2.0 litre turbocharged engine up front, under the long sweeping bonnet of the car.
The engine is paired to a nine-speed gearbox for super smooth, super quick gear changes. That also means a super smooth and quiet ride on top of the added benefit of superb fuel economy. That is the epitome of luxury in a car isn’t it? Smooth, quiet, comfortable ride in any conditions. The smooth ride is also thanks to Mercedes-Benz’s very famous Dynamic Body Control suspensions which senses the road and preps up the suspension for optimum travel to keep the car flat as you go over undulations and rough surfaces. That, and keep your bum plush on the seats.
The Mercedes-Benz E350 AMG Line will set you back MYR399,888. No matter how you look at it, it is still going to be more expensive than the equivalent BMW. If my opinion matters though, I would still prefer the interior of a Mercedes- Benz to a BMW’s though. It is just much nicer, in my opinion. You also get some AMG touches like carbon fibre inserts in the interior and what not, which to me looks pretty gaudy and tacky. I like wooden inserts and inlays, they look more luxurious and proper, even a Piano Black one makes things much more comfortable to look at.
That brings us to the Mercedes-Benz E300 Exclusive Line. There is less power in the car, about 40 horse power less than the E350 AMG Line. No matter though, 258 horse power is still plenty to work with on the road of Malaysia.
The E300 Exclusive line does not get plenty of the toys or even the body kit of the more powerful E350 AMG. It still packs Lane Tracking system though. What that does for you as the driver is to keep you in your lane with Lane Keeping Assist which will alert you if you are swerving away from the lane, it will automatically help you adjust your tracks too. The Blind Spot Assist, included in the package too helps you ensure that you do not run into other cars as you change lanes. The Mercedes-Benz E300 Exclusive line sets you back MYR379,888.
Then comes the E200 SPORTSTYLE Avantgarde line (quite a mouthful name, we are just going to stick with E200 for this one). It is the least powerful of the bunch but still packs the same 2.0-litre turbocharged engine as the rest of the E-Class models to give it enough grunt at nearly 200 horse power.
Yes, it is the cheapest E-Class in the range. From the way we see it though, it does not look like you are getting much less than the other two except for the power differences. Your interior is still the very nice, very plush, and luxurious Avantgarde interior trim with some Chrome finishes. Everything Chrome and shiny makes everything looks nice and expensive so we are not complaining until a ray of sun hits it and reflects into our eyes.
The E200 comes with the usual black headlining too which may not be too bad of a thing. It accentuates the chrome bits in the cabin and the carbon grain aluminium trims in the car. You still get the aluminium sports pedals too so it is still a proper Mercedes-Benz interior at its core. The Mercedes-Benz E200 SPORTSTYLE Avantgarde will set you back MYR329,888, cheapest of the bunch.
